SAPPORO, Japan -- A gin made in Niseko, Hokkaido, has won the top award at an international gin competition, sparking hopes the ski resort can become a year-round tourist hot spot.

Niseko Distillery's Ohoro Gin (Standard) won the "World's Best" award in the classic gin category at the World Gin Awards 2024 in London in February. The award is the top prize for the "country winners," out of 26 entrants competing in the category.
